‘London Runner’ came about from a collection of demos from Ralph, our multi-instrumental keyboard player. I have young kids so I don’t sleep much. I remember nursing a cup of tea in the kitchen of our Partick flat in the wee small hours and being really hooked on this repetitive guitar motif. It made me think of running, which gave the title. The song seemed to arrive fully formed in about 25 minutes. I still have the first draft of the lyrics on a bit of paper.

The London Runner is my dad. He was born with Cystic Fibrosis. At the time, very little was understood about the condition. Coming from a family with an Armed Forces background, he was given very little quarter growing up. He went to school, university, had a family, and a career that took him from Northern Ireland to London back to Northern Ireland. Cystic Fibrosis is a hateful condition. My dad put his incredibly long life down to some early medical advice, to take up what in the 60’s and 70’s was a new craze from America - jogging. He would run religiously, morning and night, to unclog his lungs. People would stop, laugh, ask him what he was doing. Our album, ‘A Little Less Lost’, is full of life’s twists and turns, but is ultimately hopeful. I think London Runner is a natural closer. I suppose I have struggled with low moods all my life. I wrote this song, taking my dad’s example, as a reminder to keep going.
